Mummifying Tomatoes

Description
A firm favourite and one of our most demanded activities. Children work in teams to learn how to mummify a tomato. They clean the tomato in exactly the same way as the Ancient Egyptians prepared the body, including separating the lungs, liver and intestines into canopic jars. Includes science activity sheets.
Learning Objectives
History: Understanding the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians.
Science: Setting up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests.
Use straightforward scientific evidence to answer questions or to support their findings.Maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations.
Resources: Enough tomatoes for one per pair of children + one left over, natron mix from part 1 (or 500g of salt, 250g bicarb of soda and a pack of ground mixed spices – mixed together), 1 school tray, 15 plastic teaspoons, accompanying science sheets 1 per child, 12 x plastic cups for the pulp, small containers with water (Nile water), saucer for comparison tomato.
