Five specially selected lesson plans for science week 2023 – Connections – Plants and insects

What do plants need – Teams work together to discuss and create the ideal conditions for a plant to grow. They must also discuss and decide what would happen if the conditions were far from ideal, can they predict what the results would be?

Deconstructed diagram of a plant – A firm favourite and all-round winner of an activity. Whether as a sorting exercise for EYFS or an in-depth study of the reproductive system of a flowering plant, it always results in great learning and beautiful end product.

Invertebrates bar chart – Everyone loves a good bug hunt and in this activity children look for invertebrates and fill in a tally chart. This is then translated into a bar graph.

Tree Classification – If you have trees and shrubs around the school grounds this is a great activity that is finished back in the class encouraging real research from a creative process.

Bud Hunt – Take some time to let the children explore trees in the school ground at springtime. Each bud holds a secret can they guess what it is?

Resources: Packet of fast growing seeds e.g. peas, grass, lettuce, pots, compost, spray bottle or milk bottle watering can, clip boards, pens, Bunches of spent flowers (ask parents or staff to bring in old bunches) or  flowers/plants from school grounds, roots of common weeds, trowels, laminate labels, white board pens, shower curtain sheets, containers, bug identification tally sheets (included), tally to bar graph sheets (included).
